How to Find Your Ring Size Without Going to the Store (And How to Find Hers Without Her Finding Out!)

You’ve got the setting, the words and the courage all settled and ready to go for a spectacular proposal to your beloved, but there’s one crucial thing missing – the ring! Ring sizing can be tricky, especially if you’re doing it at home or trying to pull a fast one on your (hopefully soon-to-be) fiancé to surprise them with a fairy-tale proposal and perfectly fitted ring to match. Whether you’ve talked openly about getting engaged but want to save yourself a trip to the jeweler or you’re trying to find your sweetie’s ring size without them knowing, we have compiled a helpful list of tips and tricks that will help you find the perfect fit!
Use paper or a piece of string – This technique is a great way to find your ring size at home. Using either a string or a piece of paper (cut it about 5” long and ½” wide), wrap it around towards the base of your finger. Gently move it up towards the knuckle, adjusting the paper accordingly to make sure that the determined size will be able to slip over the knuckle. Make a mark where the long end overlaps and measure the length of paper or string with a ruler.
Using a ring sizing chart (check out this printable one!), find your measurement to determine which size is best. If the measurement falls in between two sizes, choose the larger one, because even if it is a little loose, it is much easier to make a ring smaller than it is larger.
Ask a friend – It’s likely that ring size isn’t a hot topic of conversation between you and your loved one, but chances are that she’s probably talked about it with a friend. Be sure to ask around to see if her friends have any insight, and even if they don’t, they can ask in a subtle way. Consider seeing if her friends will go the extra mile and take her engagement ring or jewelry shopping for fun where she can get professionally measured and you’ll have all the information you need to make the right sizing decision!
Use another ring – If you’ve noticed that your soon-to-be fiancé loves to wear rings, you might just have the perfect way of finding her size without her suspecting a thing. Pay close attention to which rings she wears on what fingers so you don’t get caught trying to use a thumb ring for sizing your engagement ring. Once you’ve gotten a hold of the ring, you can use a circular ring chart to determine the right size.
You can also either take the ring to the jeweler to get sized or, if you’d rather not risk losing it, you can trace the ring, both inside and out, several times on a sheet of paper to get the most consistent estimate.
Just go for it – If none of your investigative measures have quite paid off, make your best guess and increase it by one full ring size to play it safe. Odds are she’ll still love you if the ring is a little loose or fits too snug and she’ll love you even more when she can flaunt her new engagement ring after you’ve gotten it re-sized. Many jewelers offer temporary settings for engagement rings with a designated time span within which you can send back the ring and get it sized and set to your exact specifications following your proposal.
Whether you’re in it together or you’re trying to be sneaky to surprise your fiancé with the proposal of her dreams, the techniques above should give you an accurate estimation of the proper size for an engagement ring.
